Linux-hosted process accessing DBISAM data? |

Charles Bainbridge | I have a customer using my Windows application. They also have a web server running on CentOS/Linux and guess what? Yes, they want to publish information via the web-site pulling data from the DBISAM database! Is there any viable method of achieving this or am I going to have to say 'no' for a change?

My reply via email: Not currently, no. We don't have a DBISAM ODBC Driver or PHP extension for Linux. I just got done doing a PHP extension for ElevateDB, but it's Windows-only currently and I don't have any port available to DBISAM or Linux at this time. I can certainly add this to the list of enhancement requests. I'm going to start looking at our Linux support during the spring improvements this year. I've been putting it off, however, because we haven't had a huge amount of interest in Linux over the years. This is probably because most of our customers are Delphi/C++Builder/Visual Studio developers that only deploy on Windows. If Embarcadero comes out with a new cross-platform compiler, then we will certainly see interest in Linux start increasing. Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

Stephen Barker | Sorry to hijack this, but I had exactly the same question.
One of my customers who has been using a Windows DBISAM 4 C/S application of mine wants to move the database to an internet-based server where: 1. Their existing staff can still access it (I'm proposing Remote Desktop Services for this) using the application, and from multiple sites. 2. Their new website can directly access the same database to process updates and inserts I've only just realised the flaw - the website people use PHP on Linux. Is there any option coming up for this - a Linux PHP driver? Otherwise I guess I'll have to develop some specific web services for the website developers to use to get at the data. I don't currently have a need for a Linux version of DBISAM, just a way of connecting to it from a Linux server running PHP. thanks, Steve "Tim Young [Elevate Software]" wrote: Charles, My reply via email: Not currently, no. << Is there any option coming up for this - a Linux PHP driver? >> Nothing concrete, but I'm considering doing some work in this area. We're getting more and more requests for Linux binaries (as opposed to something like component libraries for Lazarus or Kylix under Linux) of the ODBC Driver and Server. Plus, now that I've got a PHP driver for EDB, it's fairly easy to back-port it for DBISAM (at least, I think ). -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |
