Suggestion:

I will be glad if there is an engine property to deal with a creation of .old files at all (config, catalog, tables, indexes)

Default should be True for compatibility issues.

I'm not 100% sure what you want but I wrote a small utility that just goes through and deletes all .old files if whatever it was I was doing worked. I like to have them there just in case it didn't work. So rather than a switch to prevent them being created I'd be a lot happier with an engine function to clean them up.
