When can't I configure the DBISAM Database Server to use a configuration file or database path that is on a network drive and run it properly as a Windows service ?

Windows services normally run under a special Local System user account, and this user account doesn't have access to network drives/resources. It is normally recommended that you do not try to have services access network resources, but if you must do so, the solution is to modify the service properties so that the service is running under a different user account. To do so, please perform the following steps:

1) While logged in as an administrator on the Windows machine, go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools:

2) Double-click on the Services link:

3) Double-click on the DBISAM Database Server from the list of services:

4) Select the Log On tab, and then click on the This account radio button. Enter in the new user account that you would like to use along with the proper password.
